Messi led the rout as Barcelona thrashed Lyon to book a place in the Champions League last 16

Barcelona reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a win against Lyon after Lionel Messi scored twice and set up two more – a record of 12th consecutive quarter-final.  

Barcelona drew 0-0 in the first leg as Lyon But Lionel Messi scored chipped home a controversial penalty confirmed by VAR.

Philippe Coutinho doubled their lead 15 minutes later when he tapped into the net after an unselfish pass from Luis Suarez

Lucas Tousart restored Lyon’s hope just before the hour mark  as he volleyed into the net from close range after a failed clearance by Sergio Busquets.

Lionel Messi then clinched the game with a run and a finish before assisting late strikes from Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele.

Barcelona will discover their quarter-final and potential semi-final opponents on Friday at 4:00 GMT.
