Champions League: Atletico beat Juventus despite VAR controversies

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Juventus

Atletico Madrid secured a great victory over Juventus in the Champions League last 16 first leg despite VAR controversies.

Atletico were denied a penalty and a goal from Alvaro Morata goal after consultations from video assistant referee (VAR) before they opened the scoring

The first half ended goalless before two late goals from Juve’s two center backs Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin gave Atletico a great advantage.

A scramble from a corner sees Alvaro Morata head down, it hits Mario Mandzukic on the shins and defender Jose Maria Gimenez reacts first to slam home from about eight yards.

Diego Godin scored Atletico’s winner, he stroke a volley from a tight angle, which deflected off Cristiano Ronaldo.

Striker Diego Costa and midfielder Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid and Juve left-back Alex Sandro will all miss the second leg on Tuesday, 12 March after receiving a third bookings of the tournament.

Ronaldo – who is aiming to win a sixth Champions League and a fourth in a row – had Juve’s best chance as his powerful 35-yard free-kick was tipped over by Jan Oblak.
