Wasteful Barcelona failed to secure an away goal in a goalless draw against Lyon

Lyon 0-0 Barcelona

Barcelona were dominant at Lyon but failed to convert any of their 25 shots in a goalless Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.

Even though they were favorite to go through the Quarter-finals for the 11th consecutive season, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Phillipe Coutinho efforts were all saved by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Lyon’s best chance was Martin Terrier‘s long-range shot on the bar which was tipped over by Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

La Liga champions Barca are seven points clear on top of the table ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid, but they have not won Champions League since 2015 after victory over Juventus in the final.

This poor finishing without an away goal leaves the tie in balance. Lyon will travel to Barcelona hoping to get at least an away goal.

Barca have now drawn four of their last five games in all competitions and should have scored twice in the opening four minutes but Ousmane Dembele shot off target and Messi’s free-kick went over the bar.

Lyon, who are the only team to win Ligue 1 leaders Paris St-Germain this season, could have snatched a goal themselves but Houssem Aouar’s strike was pushed away by Germany international Ter Stegen and Memphis Depay shot went wide.

The return leg takes place at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, 13 March.
