Where the downward spiral started for Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho, 55 was sacked on Tuesday by Manchester United after a brief one-on-one meeting with Ed Woodward, his two and a half years in charge at Old Trafford came to an end.

This sack came just two days after a humiliation from their big rival, Liverpool. But the problem of Mourinho and Manchester United started even before the current season began.

How it all started for Mourinho this season

Mourinho’s Assistant & “brother” –  Rui Faria Left May 2018 after 17 years of working along side Mou. This may have been the beginning of Mou’s breakdown. Faria has worked under Mourinho since his very first job in charge of Uniao Leiria and Mourinho believes no coach can replace his “brother”. Faria’s last match in the dug-out with United was the FA Cup 1-0 defeat to Chelsea May 19 2018. Faria left in search for his first managerial role but he is still currently club-less.

The Portuguese manager wanted at least a new central defender in Summer 2018, but the club did not back him even after he signed five years contract extension. In a press conference he said “ “I would like to have two more players,” he said. “I think I am not going to have two. He wanted two defenders: a center half and a center back.

Then there came his fight with Anthony Martial during the preseason tour in the United State, the French winger left for the birth of his second child. “I found out that Martial was going to Paris when he told me. It was two or three days ago,” said Mourinho. The unsettled French winger angered Mourinho further by refusing to return to America after the birth of baby Swan. He was fined, as confirmed by Mourinho – it is believed to be about £180k.

Martial upset Jose Mourinho by leaving Los Angeles to be with his partner Melanie Da Cruz

Jose Mourinho left frustrated as Manchester United failed to land him a centre-back. He fought against the board for not having his way. Though Manchester United denied talk of rift between Ed Woodward and Mourinho.

Then his fight with the media in August 2018 after his side lost 3-nil against Tottenham in Old Trafford. In his press conference he stormed out saying, “I won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together,” Mourinho said. “Three for me and two for them. Respect, respect, respect man.”

Then came the rumor of feud with Paul Pogba, he stripped the French mid-fielder captaincy, then training ground incident, relationship that was not repaired until his departure. In his last game in charge, Paul Pogba was on the bench against Liverpool and was not called up. When asked Mourinho said he never intended to use the French midfielder for the game.
