Group H: Manchester United missed the opportunity to top the group after losing against Valencia

Manchester United missed the chance to win Champions League Group H after losing to Valencia with Paul Pogba and Juan Mata miss, and Phil Jones’ own goal. A win would have taken them above Juventus, who were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by Young Boys of Switzerland.

Going into the game Manchester United have already qualified for the knockout stages.  They were beaten 15th place La Liga club Valencia, who are struggling to score goals this season and were booed off by their fans on Saturday draw against Sevilla.

Carlos Soler scored the opener 17th minute from Jones’ clearance header. Phil Jones made a wrong decision and scored an own goal 2 minutes into the second half.

The young United forward Marcus Rashford scored a late consolation goal as he headed home Ashley Young’s cross after Jesse Lingard kept the ball in play.

Juan Mata equalized as he fired a volley wide from inside the box after Pogba’s smart chip over the defence.

United would have finished top had they on won because Juventus last against Young Boys. They would have had the opportunity to face one of Atletico Madrid, Roma, Schalke, Ajax and Lyon in the knockout stages.
