Liverpool will face an uphill task to reach the Champions League knockout stage after succumbing to a  2-1 defeat against Paris St-Germain.  While Napoli had an easy ride against Red Star Belgrade to move top of Group C, but qualification from the group depends on the final match results.

Liverpool need to win Napoli at Anfield in the final fixture to progress, the Serie A side defeated Red Star Belgrade 3-1 to top the group.

PSG dominated most part of the game with 8 shots on target and goals from Juan Bernat and Neymar. But Liverpool had only one shot on target – a penalty goal from James Milner, just before the break.

If Liverpool win Napoli and PSG are beaten away at Red Star Belgrade, both Liverpool and Napoli will go through. Both teams will have nine points to PSG’s eight, and who finishes top will depend on the result at Anfield.

According to BBC Sports there are two scenarios for Liverpool to qualify:

Scenario 1:

Having lost 2-1 to Napoli in Italy, a 1-0 win would edge them through on away goals scored.

Scenario 2:

“If PSG draw at Red Star and Liverpool win, the Reds, PSG and Napoli will be level on nine points. They would be separated by their record in matches against each other – essentially a mini three-team group, discounting results against Red Star.”

“A Liverpool victory on 11 December would see them top that on six points, with PSG and Napoli level on five points. Who progresses out of those two would depend on Napoli’s result at Anfield.”
