DC United knocked out of MLS play-offs as Wayne Rooney missed penalty

DC United were knocked out of MLS in a penalty shootout as Wayne Rooney and two other players, Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLeon failed to convert their shots. 

Frederic Brillant scored the opener for DC in the 21st minute. Then Federico Higuain   – the brother of AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain – equalized before the break. The match ended 1-1, extra time was added before penalty shootout.

Federico Higuain scored his second early extra time (96th minute). Then, Nick DeLeon scored a late goal in the 116th minute to send the game to penalties.

The former England captain, Rooney took the first penalty but his shot was saved by Zack Steffen. Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLeon also missed from the spot as DC lost the shootout 3-2.

Rooney was made captain after his first three games, he led DC United from bottom table of the Eastern Conference into the play-offs scoring 12 goals with seven assists.
