This is a case of apprentice winning the boss as Frank Lampard – former Chelsea player (who played under Mourinho), and current coach of Derby County won Manchester United on penalty shoot-out. Jose Mourinho rested 5 players, including Pogba, Luke, Victor, Valencia and David.

Manchester United scored 3 minutes minute into the match – Juan Mata scored from a great combination between Martial, Lukaku and Lingard. They missed several opportunities to finish the game. However, towards the end of first half Derby County looked more hungry with the ball and forced a couple of saves. Then continued the high tempo press during the second half and got rewarded.

Derby County got an early second half equalizer through Harry Wilson. Then 22 minutes into the second half United goal keeper – Sergio Romero was sent off after intentionally handling the ball outside the 18 yard box denying Derby an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Jack Marriott scored their second goal 5 minutes to full time, making it 2-1 – a well deserved lead. But then United started pressing hard and got their equalizer (2-2) through Morouane Fellaini 95th minute just a minute before the final whistle setting the match up to a penalty shootout.

The 16 penalty shootouts were played, all but one player failed to score – Phil Jones of Manchester United and this led to their crashing out of Carabao Cup in front of their fans.
